Tim plays “The Moeller Method” taught to him by the great Jim Chapin from the USA

A Night with Jim Chapin was a Night to Remember

Jim Chapin, as one of the world's most influential drum teachers, does not get the chance these days to play live with a Jazz group in front of an audience. He is mainly conducting drum clinic seminars, masterclasses and demonstrations without a backing group in front of a live audience.

When he heard that Jim Chapin was visiting the UK again to conduct more clinics Tim Ward fixed Jim to play a live night at Earlswood Motor Yacht Club with Tim Ward's own Jazz Trio.

The night was well attended by many prominent drummers and Jim Chapin fans who had travelled from many parts of the country to see the 83 year old legend perform live. At the final count over 100 people attended a great night which will be remembered by everyone who was present.

Tim Ward warmed up the audience with his Jazz Trio and then vacated his drum stool for the great Jim Chapin who soon acclimatised himself, warmed to the band and got in to his stride drumming and singing some of his favourite standards. They included rarely known songs about Gene Krupa and even one about Buddy Rich! He treated the audience to several great drum solos showing inspiration to many people that someone going on 84 could still set the drums and audience alight!

During the break after the first set Jim signed some of his early LP's for drummer/collectors that were present and gave drumming advice to many. The second half was his usual burst of energy and he had a talk with the audience about some of his favourite times. The band came on and he again entertained a very enthusiastic audience until the finish of the night. Jim had the time of his life and you could really see how much he was enjoying himself.

Tim Ward said "It was a great night which was memorable for all the drummers present no matter what their level of playing ability. After playing Jim's system for a number of years and learning one - to -one from the master I wanted to put on a night which positively inspired other drummers. I am glad to say I achieved that with 'A NIGHT WITH JIM CHAPIN'- Thanks Jim!!"

Jim Chapin is considered to be one of the most influencial drummers of this century.

Based in the USA he has single handedly influenced modern American drumming and now at 83 years of age still conducts masterclasses throughout the world.

Jim Chapin taught the world renowned Gene Krupa and has also taught and influenced many of todays top drummers including Vinnie Colaiuta, Dave Weckl and Steve Smith.

He is on the Faculty of the Berklee Music College in the USA and also The Drummers Collective in New York.

He has received many lifetime acheivement awards in the USA in other countries and has been inducted into The Drummers Hall of Fame of The American Percussive Arts Society.

He wrote " Advanced Techniques for the Modern Drummer " over 60 years ago which has since become the " drummers bible " selling millions of copies. This book was considered by even major drummers as impossible to play at the time that he first published, so Jim Chapin used to take a practice pad and sticks around with him to show even the most advanced drummer of the time how to play the techniques contained in his book.

We were sorry to learn that Jim's wife who had been suffering from cancer for many years passed away when he returned to the USA and we would all like to offer him our deepest sympathies at this time.
